Session Description

Continuing his lifelong concern with equity in education, Jonathan Kozol will explore the power of collaboration between educators as one important means of working towards equitable access to opportunities that inspire an appetite for learning in students.

Speaker Biography

Jonathan Kozol has devoted nearly his entire life to the challenge of providing equal opportunity to every child in our public schools. He is the National Book Award-winning author of Death at an Early Age, Rachel and Her Children, Savage Inequalities, Amazing Grace, The Shame of the Nation, and Fire in the Ashes. He has been working with children in inner-city schools for more than 50 years.

Lenses on Equity: The call for equity across our schools, and school-based practices that promote it

OICL’s 2015-16 Speaker Series aims to build the capacity of school communities to work towards equity in education by showcasing cutting-edge ideas of leading scholars and practitioners, and facilitating dialogue about school-based applications of these ideas. Sessions will explore different lenses on equity, such as identity, resource allocation, curriculum & instruction, school discipline, and community-based solutions. All sessions will address the essential question: What can we do in our roles as educators to promote equity and create conditions for all of our students to have impactful and transformative academic experiences in safe learning environments?
